WHAT IS A FRAGRANCE?
A fragrance is a complex mixture of delicate scents, carefully balanced to produce the desired effect. Of all our senses, our sense of smell is the one capable of evoking the strongest memories. It is capable of transporting us, in an instant, to distant times and distant places. It conjures memories of love, pleasure, youth.
Fragrance causes the mind to create a steady flow of mental images that recreate the experiences and location associated with that scent.
Fragrance has an effect on stress and concentration levels, it can also alter moods and trigger memories.
THE LIFE OF A FRAGRANCE
Fragrance is animated, vibrant and alive. It truly has a life of its own, constantly changing on your skin.
The first impression of a perfume is never accurate, because a fragrance is designed by a perfumer to develop in three stages. Fine fragrance is an intricate mingling and balancing of many different scents, called “notes”.
Fragrance always contains three stages: a “top note”, a “middle note” and “the dry down”.
When you first apply a fragrance, you smell what perfumers call the “top note”. Fresh, light scents usually characterise the “top note” which is your first impression. This top note disappears the most rapidly after application to the skin, usually lasting about 15 minutes.
The next stage is called the “middle note”. This is the heart of the perfume. The fragrance settles down and is in harmony with the skin. The middle note of a scent usually lasts 2-4 hours.
The final stage of a perfume is known as the dry down, or “bottom note”, of which only the heaviest scents remain to leave a lasting impression. The dry down usually emerges 4-6 hours later, and will gradually fade away.
